Chisora calls out heavyweight champion.
Of all the heavyweight division’s main players, Derek Chisora is one who has been around seemingly forever. Turning professional in early 2007, he is still officially an active professional and possesses a very loyal following.
A fan-favourite and a respected competitor in general, the Zimbabwean-born Briton has always wore his heart on his sleeve, putting his supporters first and results second.
His résumé reads like a who’s who of this era and even some of the last: Tyson Fury (three times), Oleksandr Usyk, Joseph Parker (twice), Dillian Whyte (twice), David Haye, Agit Kabayel, Vitali Klitschko, and more.
Of each of those fights, Chisora happens to have officially lost all of them, but that has never stopped him from being a popular player and a beloved veteran.
In 50 fights, he has won 36 times and lost 14, the most recent being a decision loss this April to Deontay Wilder. He has also challenged for the WBC title on two occasions, those being in his fight with Klitschko and his third fight with Fury.
Another interesting thing to note is that Chisora has fought two of the four fighters in boxing history to be both a cruiserweight and heavyweight champion, those fighters being Haye and Usyk.
Another of those four is, of course, the legendary Evander Holyfield. As for the last of the quartet? Well, Chisora has now set his sights on him for his next fight.
Former unified cruiserweight champion Murat Gassiev became the full WBA heavyweight champion following former opponent Usyk’s decision to relinquish his unified crown.
Gassiev made the first defence of his belt earlier this month against Peter Kadiru, then faced off with Chisora in the ring.
But while Gassiev has voiced his desire for a unification with WBC champion Kabayel, Chisora has now made clear that he wants Gassiev next.
On Twitter yesterday, Chisora posted a somewhat bizarre graphic of him and Gassiev as chickens to tease a fight between them.
Should the 42-year-old Chisora actually become world champion after everything? Well, what a story it would be.
