Chisora claims a big fight is next for Dubois.
When Derek Chisora defeated Kubrat Pulev in their 2022 rematch, he stated in the post-fight interview that he wanted to fight “The Bronze Bomber”, this being Deontay Wilder.
At the time, virtually nobody thought that that was a good fight for Chisora. Wilder had only lost to Tyson Fury, while Chisora had just gotten his first win since 2019.
Almost four years later, Chisora-Wilder is a reality. And what’s more, Chisora is the favourite to win. It is strange what the passage of time can do.
However, in an interview with Seconds Out, Chisora dropped a potential bombshell regarding another British heavyweight and who he will apparently be fighting next.
Upon being asked about Daniel Dubois potentially fighting Zhilei Zhang, Chisora replied, “Nah, he’s not fighting Zhilei Zhang. F*** that. Zhilei Zhang will knock him out.”
Chisora then went on to say, “This is what I said to Frank [Warren]: I’m like, ‘What are we tryin’ to do here, get him killed? Give him another easy fight, build him up, and then that’s it.’ But I’ll tell you a scoop: Daniel is fighting Fabio [Wardley].”
Chisora has established himself as a joking, playful character over the years, so it’s ultimately hard to tell how serious he was being. However, his statement didn’t appear to be in jest.
A fight between Daniel Dubois (22-3, 21 KOs) and Fabio Wardley (20-0-1, 19 KOs) would see two huge-punching, all-but-one-win-by-knockout heavyweights from Britain colliding for Wardley’s WBO world title.
Dubois is coming off his rematch defeat to Oleksandr Usyk, whereas Wardley is coming off his triumph over Joseph Parker.
The fight would be just the fifth time two British-born heavyweights have competed for a world championship (with the last one also involving Dubois), and no matter what, that dynamic makes this a very interesting proposition.
