Heavyweight world champion open to facing British fan-favourite.
Derek Chisora remains one of the most reliable and respected figures in British boxing. A tough heavyweight veteran who always gives it his all, he has become a fan-favourite despite not always emerging victorious.
This April, Chisora lost an entertaining battle with Deontay Wilder, the 14th defeat of the Briton’s 50-fight career. Despite this (and despite claiming that he would retire after the Wilder bout), he has remained in potential fight discussions.
For example, when Murat Gassiev made the first defence of his WBA world championship against Peter Kadiru this July, Chisora got into the ring, and the two engaged in a face-off.
As sudden as it was, a fight between Chisora and the Russian seemed a realistic one for many, and Chisora himself has hinted since that the matchup is one that he wants.
Well, Gassiev has now spoken on Chisora and revealed his stance on a fight with him.
“That is his style and the way he behaves”, Gassiev spoke of Chisora. “There is nothing unusual about it. He promotes himself in the way he knows how, and he remains a big name in boxing.
“My attitude towards him does not change because I know what to expect from him. These kinds of statements and social media posts are very popular now. Personally, I do not welcome it. I have never behaved that way; I prefer to show everything in the ring.”
Regarding the fight itself, Gassiev stated, “Everything is possible if it makes sense for my career and my team supports it. Why not? Derek remains dangerous despite having had a lot of fights, and there is always something interesting when he is in the ring.”
Former unified cruiserweight champion Gassiev is still only 32, a full ten years younger than Chisora. With the respective styles of both men, a showdown between the two could prove to be very interesting.
