Deontay Wilder speaks on how his daughter was born.
Deontay Wilder has–especially in recent times–divided public opinion towards him, this mostly due to the claims he has made regarding his first official loss to Tyson Fury.
But whether you like him or not, there’s no denying that the American brought excitement to the heavyweight division in a way that only a certain type of boxer can.
Reigning as WBC champion for five years and becoming an Olympic bronze medallist, Wilder’s achievements become even more remarkable when you are reminded that he took up boxing at the late age of 20.
It was the birth of Wilder’s first child in 2005 that largely inspired him to pursue a career in the sport. This child–a daughter–was born with spina bifida, a birth defect characterised by incomplete closing of the spine.
This condition can result in a myriad of problems for the afflicted individual, but beyond this, Wilder has now shared the surprising story of how his daughter was born.
Appearing alongside Derek Chisora (ahead of their fight this Saturday) on “Piers Morgan Uncensored”, Wilder told Morgan of the curious tale upon being asked how his daughter’s condition impacted him as a father.
“It had a strong impact on my life, because I chose to keep her. Her mother didn’t, you know? Her mother tried to set me up–you know–to have the baby, you know? She ejected my sperm in her and ran in the bathroom and locked the door, and that’s how we had her”, stated Wilder.
“The Bronze Bomber” then went on to say, “You know, truth be told, she don’t even know I know this, but I’m tellin’ it to the world.”
When queried as to how he acquired this knowledge, Wilder responded, “I’m smart.”
The former heavyweight champion then said of the mother of his child, “Most of her relationships only last[ed] for two months or whatever, because she was a promiscuous woman. I didn’t know it at the time. I only found out this thing by readin’ her journal. She didn’t know that I read her journal, either.”
Wilder goes very in-depth while telling the story, but says that while pregnant, the woman didn’t take the necessary vitamins and minerals that his daughter required to be healthy. As a result, she was born with spina bifida.
Wilder concludes by saying, “So, goin’ into the doctor’s office, we had an opportunity to terminate the pregnancy, but it’s just somethin’ in my heart. I just felt like she deserved to live. I wanted to take up on this opportunity of takin’ care of a girl that was born with spina bifida, a child that’s in need. She needed me. That’s [why] I needed her.”
