Deontay Wilder explains why he never fought Oleksandr Usyk

Deontay Wilder sheds light on why the proposed mega fight with unified champion Oleksandr Usyk never materialised

Deontay Wilder (44-4-1, 43ko’s) has explained why the much discussed Oleksandr Usyk (24-0, 15ko’s) unified heavyweight championship fight never materialised.

Wilder will now face British icon Derek Chisora (36-13, 23ko’s) at the O2 arena on a MFPro promotion on April 4th.

The fight that is billed as ‘100’ will be both Wilder and Chisora’s 50th professional fights respectively.

Wilder, the former WBC heavyweight champion of the world, has been widely regarded as one of the fiercest punchers in the sports history.

With an unorthodox style, Wilder has struck fear into his opponents over the years, with one punch knockout power in a devastating right hand.

The Alabaman born star had a famous trilogy with two time unified champion Tyson Fury.

Wilder was brutally stopped in the rematch and trilogy fights against the Gypsy King, with many believing that these fights took a lot out of the 40 year old.

Since then, Wilder has been comprehensively defeated by Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang.

Despite this, his commercial draw and star power landed talks of a clash against the all time great and heavyweight king Oleksandr Usyk.

The fight was rumoured to take place in San Fransisco as part of a record breaking event with a brand new promotion.

Deontay Wilder has revealed why these rumours never come true.

Speaking to Fight Hub TV, Wilder stated: The fight was real “at moments.

“And me and Derek have been working on a fight for a very long time.

“This fight was supposed to have happened back in December.

“Usyk wanted to fight me, I don’t think they, you know, had a real set date, a place where they wanted to go.

“That was still lingering around, and you know the clock goes like this, it’s tick tock”.

With Usyk defeating Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury and Daniel Dubois twice respectively, the Ukrainian wants Wilder to complete the generational set.
