Morrell calls out popular British contender.

If you are David Morrell, you are likely feeling quite frustrated right now. After all, your fight against Callum Smith for the WBO interim light-heavyweight title has fallen through, and both you and your opponent have been pulled from the card as a result.

That’s the news that came out earlier today, and it arrived as a profound disappointment to the boxing public. Not only because a very good fight has fallen apart, but because that fight took so long to make.

Indeed, Smith vs. Morrell went through a lengthy process before it was finally put together, and the sighs of relief that were let out when it was will now likely be sighs of dismay.

And ultimately, sighing is all you can do when a fight–especially such an anticipated one like this–gets cancelled. It’s something boxing fans are always prepared for, but not really.

But of course, the fight was to only be in a couple weeks’ time, and plenty of tickets have already been sold. So, pulling the show entirely wouldn’t have made sense.

That’s why Ben Whittaker stepped in, being moved up from his undercard slot to feature in the main event against Braian Nahuel Suarez.

While Whittaker’s opponent is more than a solid one, there were some who felt like the Briton should be headlining alongside David Morrell instead.

There is no denying how good of a fight that would be, and Morrell himself has taken to Instagram to say as much. Tagging Whittaker, the Cuban wrote, “I’m ready to fight April 18th. How are you older than me and still a prospect? Let’s give the fans the fight they want to see!”

Given how this is meant to be a progression fight for Whittaker before his American debut a few months from now, it is unlikely that he will be facing the world-ranked Morrell in his next contest.

Maybe one day, though.
