Popular Doncaster heavyweight to fight big name in next fight.
By Dave Allen’s own admission, he is not the best heavyweight in the world. In fact, he’d probably tell you he’s not even the best heavyweight from his street.
But is he the most loved, the most relatable to the common man, the most personable?
He might just be.
Such is the easygoing nature of a man whose various nicknames include “The White Rhino”, a moniker that was apparently given to him because he has “a massive head and a big nose”.
Well, the modest Yorkshireman received a sizable boost in his following after his two fights with Johnny Fisher, which resulted in a controversial loss and an emphatic knockout victory.
It was this knockout victory that won Allen the WBA Inter-Continental title, his first belt in 33 professional fights. It was this belt that he unsuccessfully defended in his defeat to Arslanbek Makhmudov.
But in his most recent outing, Allen ran straight over the outclassed Frenchman Karim Berredjem, hanging his 12-10 opponent out to dry in just 57 seconds.
Since then, there have been murmurs regarding who Allen will be fighting next, with some very interesting rumours regarding who it could be.
Allen has directly named Zhilei Zhang as the opponent he believes it will be, but it appears likely that if he is to face the feared Chinese puncher, it won’t be in his next fight.
Allen revealed on his Instagram that his next fight is likely to be the biggest of his career, and now Jamie Moore (Allen’s trainer and manager) has told BoxingScene, “He’s promised me again 100 percent to training camp. There’s another world-class fighter maybe in the mix, as well, so there’s a couple of names bouncing about. But it looks like towards the end of May, we’re gonna be in a proper fight again.”
This second opponent remains unnamed for now, but should the estimated date be correct, we should be finding out who it is fairly soon.
