Dave Allen agrees to “50/50 on the biggest stage”.
Fan-favourite Yorkshire heavyweight Dave Allen is a prime example of how British boxers do not have to operate at the very top level of the sport in order to be treated like they do.
If you are relatable, if you are humble, if an audience can imagine being personally acquainted with you, then you will be a popular figure in the United Kingdom.
This can be seen in a number of fighters throughout the years, but Allen might just be the best modern-day instance of this type of pugilist.
A man who goes by more nicknames than Apollo Creed, you likely will know him as either “The Doncaster De La Hoya” or “The White Rhino”. Either way, Allen is down-to-Earth, laid-back, and self-deprecating. In other words, the full British package.
For this reason, he has gained a cult following throughout his career, a legion of fans that has grown in the last two years or less.
This increase in numbers is largely down to his two fights with Johnny Fisher–himself a popular domestic heavyweight–the first ending in a controversial loss for Allen, while the second ended in a spectacular knockout victory for him.
Since then, he has lost to Arslanbek Makhmudov, beaten Karim Berredjem, been stopped by Filip Hrgovic, and defeated Ross McGuigan most recently.
Despite 9 losses in his 37 fights, he remains a beloved figure, and he has now teased on social media that he has agreed to a “big fight” that he described as a “50/50 on the biggest stage”.
Promoter Eddie Hearn recently stated that Allen was offered a fight with Irish heavyweight Thomas Carty on the Katie Taylor vs. Flora Pili undercard, but Allen stated that it wasn’t a fight he wanted to take part in.
However, most believe that the fight he has now agreed to is indeed the Carty bout, which would see two heavyweight ticket-sellers going at each other in an intriguing clash of big men.
Allen currently has a tick-over fight scheduled for next month.
