Dana White announces star signing for Zuffa Boxing

Zuffa Boxing have announced the signing of a star world champion.

Dana White’s Zuffa Boxing is exactly one week out from its long-awaited debut, with its first event to be held at the newly named Meta APEX in Las Vegas on Friday, the 23rd of January.

The controversial new promotional outfit is financially backed by boxing powerhouse Turki Al-Sheikh and operated by TKO Group Holdings, the parent company behind the UFC and WWE.

From the get-go, Zuffa Boxing has made it no secret their plans to disrupt the boxing world and go against the long-standing traditional boxing norms.

In the build-up to their launch, the promotion has made headlines for its controversial plans to change the landscape of boxing.

Zuffa is currently in the process of making amendments to the Muhammad Ali Boxing Act.

Legislation put in place to protect boxers from exploitation by managers, sanctioning bodies, and promoters.

This has been met with heavy criticism from the boxing industry.

In addition, they have openly stated they won’t be recognising any of the four major sanctioning bodies or working with other boxing promoters.

Instead, they will recognise only the Ring Magazine belt and their newly created in-house “Zuffa” belt, pending the Ali Act reform ruling in their favour, as many expect it will.

Their reluctance to acknowledge the four major world title belts, along with their public criticism of boxing’s current promotional system, has fuelled speculation about how they plan to attract elite talent.

To this point, there have been very few signings, with only a small number of lower-level fighters publicly linked to the promotion.

But that has all changed with Zuffa sending shockwaves throughout the boxing industry today.

With Zuffa announcing via their social media platforms today the signing of star world champion Jai Opetaia, the current IBF and Ring magazine cruiserweight champion.

This new deal is a co-promotional arrangement alongside Australian boxing promoters Tasman Fighters, who have put on Opetaia’s last three bouts in his home state of Queensland, Australia.

The Australian southpaw last competed in December, producing one of the year’s most brutal knockouts, where he stopped 40-year-old mandatory challenger Huseyin Cinkara in the 8th round.

Where Cinkara suffered a fractured neck and brain bleed as a result.

Despite being widely regarded as the top cruiserweight in boxing, Jai Opetaia has struggled to secure a unification bout since winning his maiden title against Mairis Briedis in 2022, where he famously fought 10 rounds with a broken jaw.

With potential bouts against Chris Billam-Smith and current unified champion Gilberto Ramirez failing to materialise afterwards.

With Ramirez strongly linked to a blockbuster showdown with Mexican-American superstar David Benavidez in May, it appears that the highly anticipated bout won’t be next.

A fight with newly crowned WBC champion Noel Mikaelian appears to be the easiest route to a unification bout.

Jai Opetaia has been previously promoted by Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing and Australian-based promoters Tasman Fighters.

Opetaia’s move to Zuffa raises immediate questions surrounding his IBF title and ability to secure fights with the other champions signed to other promoters.

Dana White has repeatedly stated that they will not be recognising any of the other four sanctioning bodies nor working with any of the other promoters.

A position that seemingly goes against Opetaia’s desire to become undisputed in the cruiserweight division.

Something Opetaia reaffirmed in his signing announcement video that Zuffa released on their social media platforms today.

A space to watch as Zuffa begins its quest to take over boxing.
