Dalton Smith will face mandatory challenger in his first title defence of his WBC super lightweight championship of the world
Dalton Smith (19-0, 14ko’s) recorded one of the famous British away wins in the states in January.
On an away promotion, outnumbered by Puerto Rican fans, Dalton Smith dethroned Subriel Matias (23-3, 22ko’s) by 5th round knockout.
British boxing rejoiced as the Sheffield born star was crowned WBC super-lightweight world champion.
His rise in the sport has been applauded by many.
No easy touches, and a steady rise through the levels has seen ‘Thunder’ win English, British and European titles before earning his world title shot.
Now it is time to defend his crown, and the WBC have enforced his mandatory challenger next.
The Ring Magazine have reported that “The WBC has formally ordered The Ring’s No. 1 junior welterweight to make his first defense against his mandatory challenger, former two-time belt holder Alberto Puello”.
Alberto Puello (24-1, 10ko’s) is the former WBC super lightweight champion, with impressive wins over Sandor Martin and Gary Antuanne Russell.
The man from the Dominican Republic lost his belt to Subriel Matias via majority decision.
Team Dalton Smith and Team Alberto Puello will have 30 days to negotiate a deal before purse bids being ordered.
Matchroom Boxing and Eddie Hearn will want to bring this fight to Sheffield to stage a major homecoming for their new world champion.
Recently, Matchroom narrowly lost the purse bid for Lewis Crocker’s first title defence, therefore it is imperative for their UK schedule that they secure this fight.
