Conor Benn signs multi-fight deal with Zuffa.
Conor Benn fought Regis Prograis on the Tyson Fury vs. Arslanbek Makhmudov undercard last Saturday.
On a bill with “The Gypsy King” as the headliner and two other intriguing heavyweight fights featured, it was Benn’s appearance that became the most talked-about part of the undercard.
This bout was the first after Benn’s signing with Zuffa Boxing, and we were told it would be the last. Despite being paid a reported $15 million, the agreement was apparently a one-fight deal.
So, Benn would go on to beat Prograis by unanimous decision, a win that was convincing and unconvincing at the same time. For while nobody doubted that Benn had won, plenty doubted a substantial height to his ceiling.
Well, after the fight night had concluded, headlines stated that Benn was now a free agent. It then came out a short while later that a clash with Ryan Garcia was to take place in August for the WBC welterweight championship.
Many doubted the truth behind Benn’s free agency, because paying a fighter as much money as Benn was purportedly paid for a single fight on an undercard that wasn’t actually a Zuffa card just didn’t make business sense, and the likes of Eddie Hearn and Frank Smith said as much themselves.
Those doubts have now been proven to have been very well-founded, for Benn has now signed a new multi-fight deal with Zuffa, meaning he is now very much not a free agent.
Whether or not the Garcia fight can happen now is unclear, and it will certainly be interesting to see who Benn will now fight under his new promoters.
