Benn reveals how many fights he has left at 147 pounds.
In just over a month, we will see Conor Benn and Ryan Garcia lock horns in the ring in a contest of big names with past controversies.
The affair was rumoured long before it was officially announced. But even just before it was, both Benn and Garcia traded verbals online in a debate centred around the latter’s Mexican heritage.
This culminated in Benn putting out a video message where he told Garcia in Spanish that he isn’t Mexican. The Briton has also further taunted his opponent in Spanish (which he is fluent in) in an act of psychological warfare during press conferences.
Their bout will be for the WBC welterweight world title, the belt Garcia won when he defeated then-strapholder Mario Barrios earlier this year.
But while Benn has fought at welterweight for the majority of his career, he has not actually had a bout at the welterweight limit since his 2022 stoppage over Chris van Heerden.
Benn’s last fight was a win in a catchweight bout over Regis Prograis. Before then, he had his two contests with Chris Eubank Jr. (the first being at a catchweight, while the second was at middleweight).
Because of this, many fans have questioned Benn going into a title fight at the weight. But either way, it appears the Englishman isn’t long for the 147-pound class anyway.
Benn has told The Ring that his clash with Garcia will be his final appearance at welterweight and even stated that he could potentially be moving up as far as super-middleweight.
This means that if Benn defeats “King Ry”, the crown shall only be on his head for a short while.
