Classic Ring title awarded to Marvin Hagler sells at action

Rare version of The Ring title sells at auction.

Marvelous Marvin Hagler is universally regarded as one of the greatest middleweights in the history of boxing. A 160-pound puncher with a chin of titanium, he provided the sport with some of its most exciting spectacles of all time.

A member of boxing’s “Four Kings”, he tussled with three other fistic legends across a series of fights, appearing in bouts against fellow all-time greats Thomas Hearns, Sugar Ray Leonard, and Roberto Duran.

Hagler’s victory over Hearns is the one that likely gets talked about the most. In less than three full rounds of action, the two engaged in what is considered by many knowledgeable minds in the world of pugilism as the greatest boxing match of all time.

It would end with Hagler victorious by TKO and making the 11th consecutive successful defence of his middleweight crown, adding to one of the greatest single-weight reigns any boxer has embarked upon.

Those familiar with his career (and the sport in general) will know that Hagler first became champion by travelling to London and defeating England’s Alan Minter, who was then the undisputed middleweight champion.

It was for this victory in 1980 that Hagler was awarded with the Seagram’s belt, a title that was the result of a short-lived partnership between The Ring and Seagram’s V.O. whisky.

When Seagram manufactured the belts for this brief period, The Ring title was a striking blue and gold, this being opposed to the red, white, blue, and gold colour scheme we’ve come to be familiar with today.

As a result, any remaining Seagram’s belts are considered extremely valuable, and the one awarded to Hagler has now sold for $60,000 at auction.

Quite the piece of memorabilia for any fan of boxing to have.
