Two of the biggest names in women’s boxing are being linked to a potential showdown.
Lauren Price claimed a points victory over Stephanie Pineiro to retain her welterweight world titles in Cardiff this weekend.
Price suffered a nasty cut after a clash of heads in the fifth round but fought on to secure a unanimous decision on the judges’ scorecards.
Speaking post-fight, Lauren Price explained what’s next for her: “I want the biggest fights in boxing, and what a great honour it would be to share the ring with Shields.
“It makes for a great fight, but not just one fight.
“I said to her tonight, ‘Let’s do it, I’ll come to America, and then you come to Wales,’ and she shook on it.
“So hopefully we can make that happen.
“It is why I’m in the game, I want to fight the best.
“Credit to Shields – I respect her – but I back myself!”
What did Claressa Shields say?
During a conversation with Sky Sports, Shields explained when fans can expect the match-up: “Before the end of the year, she agreed to come to 160lbs.
“That’s all I’ve been saying to all these girls, if they come to 160lbs we can make a fight.
“A lot of these girls want me to go down to 154, 147.
“I’ve already done 154, and I’m not going back down that low, so 160lbs it is.
“Me and Lauren both won Olympic gold medals. Well, I won two Olympic gold medals at 165lbs/75kg, and she won a gold medal at 165lbs also.
“I look forward to fighting her, and she doesn’t mind coming up to make the fight happen, and she even wants to come to America!
“So we may do a fight in America and then come back and do a fight here in the UK…
“If the first fight is good enough, I mean, when I beat a girl in a fight, they don’t want to rematch me. So I believe that with her pedigree, she can give a better fight.
“She will be one of the best-skilled girls that I’ve fought against, so we’ll see.”
Following Lauren Price’s victory this weekend, Claressa Shields entered the ring for a face-off, giving fans a glimpse of a potential future showdown between them.
