Carlos Adames claims two super-middleweight champions turned down fight with him

Adames claims two 168-pound champions turned down fight offer.

Carlos Adames is one of the standout fighters in the middleweight division. Considered one of the weaker weights in the sport when it comes to competition, the Dominican holds the 160-pound class’s WBC title.

It was this title he was defending when he fought Hamzah Sheeraz over a year ago. With the Briton coming in with oodles of momentum, Adames was seen as the one to prove his world-class talent.

However, it didn’t work out that way. Instead, Adames seriously halted Sheeraz’s momentum by putting on a performance that the majority of viewers believed should have earned him the win.

Adames would ultimately settle for a draw, and following the fight, Sheeraz moved up to super-middleweight. Adames would then return this March to defeat former Sheeraz opponent Austin Williams.

Following that win, Adames has stated his intention on numerous occasions to himself make the move to 168 pounds, where Sheeraz recently won the WBO title.

While he still officially holds championship status at middleweight, Adames is clear on his desire. And yesterday, he wrote in a Tweet, “Let me say it again: I’m moving up to 168. Two fighters have already turned down the fight. That’s embarrassing.”

He followed that up with a Tweet two minutes later that read, “And they’re champions….”

Adames didn’t name the champions who he claimed to have turned him down, but it could only be one of Osleys Iglesias, Jaime Munguia, and Sheeraz (considering Christian Mbilli is fighting Canelo Álvarez in September).

Without a doubt, Adames would be a terrific addition to the division, and a fight involving him against any of the top players would make for fantastic viewing.

There have been those calling for a rematch with Sheeraz at the poundage. Ultimately, we will just have to see what happens.
