The former undisputed champion is still chasing a rematch with his most recent rival.
Canelo Alvarez has not fought since he suffered a unanimous decision defeat at the hands of Terence Crawford last September.
Since then, Canelo has been recovering from arthroscopic surgery on his left elbow, all while hoping for a rematch with Crawford.
Crawford put on a masterclass in the ring that night to snatch the undisputed super middleweight crown from Canelo when they shared the ring.
However, the Omaha native announced his retirement from the sport at the end of 2025, just three months after claiming his 42nd career win.
Thus ruling out the possibility of the rematch Canelo had set his sights on.
It was announced last month that the Mexican star is now set to make his return to the ring on September 12 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
As speculation grows over who Canelo will be lacing up the gloves against next, he has explained his frustrations over Crawford’s decision.
During an interview on the Ring Magazine’s Mr Verzace Podcast, he said: “He deserves all the credit. Even if my body didn’t feel like I really wanted to, but I did well.
“You need to take the losses and learn from that and keep going.
“I had cramps in my legs, so it didn’t respond the way I really wanted, but you know, it is what it is.
“We learn from that, and we move forward. I know what mistakes I made in the fight and in the camp, too…
“I always give him all of his credit, no. But we need to run it back.
“That’s why, after the fight, I say we need to run it back, this fight. Because I don’t feel the way I really want.
“I need to make this fight happen again, and it’s going to be different. I think for him to deserve all the credit, he needs to give me the rematch, obviously.
“But he decided to retire.
“The rematch would be perfect for boxing; it is what it is, but he deserves all the credit.”
While Crawford was widely praised for his performance five months ago, Canelo Alvarez appears to hold the belief that he must do it again to prove his credibility.
Regardless, Canelo is heading into his comeback determined to return to winning ways in what is anticipated to be a world title fight.
