Four weight world champion Canelo Alvarez has made a surprise career announcement as he becomes a student at the University of San Diego.
Canelo Alvarez (63-3-2, 39ko’s) is one of the most decorated fighters of all time.
In a professional career spanning over 20 years, very few have accomplished more than the four weight world champion.
The 35 year old has been widely regarded as the face of boxing in this era, and the Mexican has plenty of plans to continue.
A return in September seems to be on the cards.
Alvarez lost his undisputed super middleweight world titles to Terence Crawford (42-0, 31ko’s) last time out.
With the man from Omaha subsequently retiring after his victory, he has left behind a fragmented division which Canelo is looking to capitalise on.
A fight with Christian Mbilli (29-0-1, 24ko’s) has been doing the rounds in the rumour mill.
Turki Al-Sheikh confirmed via X last week that concrete planning is underway to confirm the return of the man from Guadalajara as a part of Riyadh Season.
With nothing on the fight front officially announced, Canelo Alvarez has took to social media to provide a surprise career announcement.
Canelo Alvarez has announced he will resume his studies at the University of San Diego.
This post was paired with a motivational message of “it’s never too late to start”.
After achieving so much in boxing, Canelo would be excused for enjoying the fruits of his labour, but that isn’t the cloth from which he is cut.
Born to a large family, the 35 year old left school prematurely to pursue a professional boxing career.
One thing is for sure is that this new chapter certainly doesn’t close out boxing and Canelo will be studying alongside training for his return.
A role model to his Mexican people and the wider sporting world, Canelo is looking for supremacy both sportingly and academically in 2026.
