British heavyweight reveals he wanted to fight Anthony Joshua’s next opponent

Fan-favourite British heavyweight reveals he wanted to originally fight Prenga.

Anthony Joshua will be returning on the 25th of July in Saudi Arabia. It will be the Briton’s first fight since the tragic events that took place in Nigeria in December.

With a long-awaited clash against Tyson Fury on the horizon, it was a given that Joshua wouldn’t be fighting a world-class opponent in the interim.

However, many fans were still surprised at how unfamiliar they were with Kristian Prenga, who Joshua will be facing on the night.

With all 20 wins coming by knockout and only a single defeat, record-wise, there is nothing wrong with Prenga at all. It’s his résumé, though, that many have seen as a struggle to justify a fight against Joshua  with.

Though considering Joshua’s last action in the ring was against Jake Paul, a fight against a foe such as Prenga definitely makes sense. At the very least, it will give us an idea of what “AJ” has left.

However, had things turned out differently, it would seem Prenga would have already fought a British heavyweight before now.

In a new interview with talkSPORT Boxing, the popular and beloved Doncaster heavyweight Dave Allen revealed that he originally chose Prenga as his opponent for his bout in October.

“I were lookin’ through BoxRec for guys I could box for the Sheffield show before [Arslanbek] Makhmudov was mentioned”, Allen stated. “I was sendin’ some guys over–like, you know, unbeaten guys–and I remember sendin’ Prenga over to someone, and I said, ‘What do you think about Prenga?’ But no, [I] got Makhmudov instead.”

Allen is currently scheduled to fight the world-ranked Filip Hrgovic on the 16th of May, a fight the Englishman is a sizeable underdog for.

Prenga beating Joshua, though, would undoubtedly be a much bigger shock.
