Briton in negotiations to challenge women’s pound-for-pound star.
Last month, Claressa Shields made her middleweight return after her two-year tenure at heavyweight, taking on WBC and WBA middleweight champion Kaye Scott.
Australia’s 42-year-old Scott was not considered to be a challenge prior to the fight, and Shields would beat her to record her first stoppage victory since 2024.
Two weeks following Shields’s victory, former undisputed super-lightweight champion Chantelle Cameron defeated Mikaela Mayer to add the American’s WBC and WBA super-welterweight belts to her own WBO title.
And while it was assumed Cameron would be rematching Mayer due to the terms of their contract, it appears the Briton could have an even bigger fight on the horizon.
“My promoters (MVP) are actually already talking to Claressa Shields’s team, because she said she wanted to fight me”, Cameron told The Ring. “I said I’d love that opportunity, so MVP have got straight on to her team. There have been phone calls since my fight at the weekend, so the ball is rolling, and it’s moving quite quickly.
“I thought I was going to be resting, but I’m already straight into a big fight.”
Cameron famously became the first and only person to defeat the great Katie Taylor in their first encounter in 2023, and she then proceeded to push her close in their rematch later that same year.
Having also defeated Mayer recently, Cameron is building quite the résumé, and a win over Shields would add to that immeasurably.
While stating that Shields won’t fight any lower than middleweight, Cameron stated that she accepted that and said, “I’m rolling the dice and daring to be great. It’s about legacy; I’ve boxed everyone and stepped up to every challenge that came my way.
“This fight is very exciting, and it will be incredible if it can happen. Really feel like I would have cemented my career [if it takes place].”
