Former professional boxer jailed for 14 years.
If you are aware of Jonathan Slowey, it’s very likely you know him more from his criminal actions than his professional boxing career.
From 2011 to 2016, while fighting under the name “Jon Slowey”, the Glasgow native compiled a record of 19-3, with every fight (both win and loss) going the distance.
The best results of Slowey’s career were a win over Spain’s Angel Lorente to win the WBC international silver featherweight title and a victory over Kris Hughes for the Scottish Area championship.
Slowey would lose an immediate rematch to Hughes for the Celtic title, and a few fights later, he would travel to Italy to unsuccessfully challenge home fighter Carmine Tommasone for the European Union championship.
Slowey finished his career by losing a four-round points decision to Jamie McGuire. However, he now finds himself being spoken about for a very different reason.
From 2012 to 2023, Slowey committed a series of crimes that have now fully come to light. Across Glasgow’s East End, East Dunbartonshire, and Aberdeen, Slowey subjected three separate women to verbal, physical, and sexual abuse.
Prosecutor Kath Harper KC stated, “He subjected them to constant accusations of cheating. He took control of their movements, who they were with, checked their phones, wore down their self-esteem, and called them horrid names.”
Additionally, she stated, “He isolated them from friends and relatives.”
Slowey’s physical actions included punching, choking, and spitting on the women, and he also took advantage of them sexually.
Glasgow’s High Court found the 35-year-old guilty on 14 counts and will be serving 14 years for his crimes, including being supervised for four years upon his release.
Slowey denied all claims from the women, reportedly being “outraged” that they had “come to this court and lied” and alleging that they and the police had “colluded” against him.
