Brandon Adams collapses; fight with Caoimhin Agyarko off

Brandon Adams loses interim title fight after collapsing in hotel room.

Brandon Adams is just one of the many names in the packed super-welterweight division.

In 2021, the American was behind on all three of the cards against Serhii Bohachuk, who had won all 18 of his fights by knockout.

Suddenly, in the 8th round, Adams turned it all around, stopping the Ukrainian to hand him his first defeat.

Adams was then out of the ring for over three years, but returned in 2024 with wins over Ismael Villareal and Francisco Daniel Veron and a split-decision loss to Andreas Katzourakis.

In that same time, Bohachuk had gone 7-1, becoming the WBC interim champion by beating Brian Mendoza and losing a highly debatable decision to Vergil Ortiz Jr.

Following the Ortiz fight, Bohachuk would beat Ishmael Davis and Mykal Fox, and then he rematched Adams on the preliminary portion of the Canelo Álvarez vs. Terence Crawford card.

Over four years on from their first encounter, Bohachuk was a healthy favourite to gain revenge. After all, since they’d last fought, Adams had only had three fights, losing one. Bohachuk had fought triple that amount.

However, Adams would end up comfortably outslugging Bohachuk, gaining a convincing win on the cards.

With the win, Adams had found his name back in discussions for big opportunities, and he was set for an IBF final eliminator against Caoimhín Agyarko.

London-born Northern Irishman Agyarko has scored victories over Troy Williamson and Ryan Kelly, as well as a debatable victory over the aforementioned Ishmael Davis.

The contest between Adams and Agyarko was to take place tomorrow night at the Chelsea Arena at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States.

However, it has now been cancelled entirely just the day prior, as Adams has been forced to withdraw due to a medical emergency.

In a statement to The Ring, Mark Habibi (Adams’s manager) stated, “Brandon was experiencing chest pain early this morning and collapsed in his hotel room and was rushed to the hospital. He’s currently been admitted and is undergoing evaluation. More details to follow. He’s absolutely crushed for not being able to participate in this fight.

“He gave everything he had in this camp and was looking forward to being at the doorstep of a world title opportunity. His heart goes out to his opponent Agyarko who travelled overseas to compete and is looking forward to making this fight happen immediately following his recovery.”

While it hasn’t been confirmed, there is speculation that Adams’s collapse was due to yet another instance of a fighter cutting weight.

As this fight was a final eliminator for the IBF super-welterweight title (currently held by Josh Kelly), it remains to be seen whether this fight will be rescheduled or if Agyarko will be made mandatory.

Agyarko has also commented on the situation, stating that he is “absolutely heartbroken” to have lost his big fight and wishing Adams well.

We, too, hope that Brandon Adams makes a swift and full recovery.
