Abdullah Mason reveals first title defence against former world champion

Abdullah Mason is in talks for a mandatory defence of his WBO lightweight crown, with a former world champion set to be the opponent.

Abdullah Mason (20-0, 17ko’s) defeated Sam Noakes (17-1, 15ko’s) for the vacant WBO Lightweight crown last time out.

The fight took place on the undercard of David Benavidez vs Anthony Yarde in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Mason, at just aged 21, is the sports youngest world champion.

In an era full of talent at this weight class, it is no doubt that the future will involve some mega fights for the man from Ohio.

In a back and forth war against Sam Noakes, Abdullah Mason won via unanimous decision.

He is set to fight another Brit in his next outing, by the name of Joe Cordina (19-1, 9ko’s).

Cordina is a former IBF super featherweight champion.

Now back with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing after a minor dispute, Cordina is on the train to become a two weight world champion.

The 130lbs limit was a struggle for Cordina, and defeat in Riyadh to Anthony Cacace in Riyadh led to a move in weight.

Consecutive points victory has led Cordina to a mandatory position for the WBO, and it seems Mason will honour this in his first title defence.

Speaking to Fight Hub TV at the Ryan Garcia vs Marrio Barrios fight on Saturday in Las Vegas, Mason stated:

“I got a mandatory Joe Cordina, so that’s in the works now”.

With no concrete details as of yet, it is unclear where this fight will take place.

Mason hints towards a fight date in April.

With Mason being signed to Top Rank, there is a possibility that Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing may offer to stage this fight in America as part of their US schedule.

Hearn is in a bitter promoter feud with Dana White currently, therefore a world title fight like this would be beneficial for Hearn’s schedule.
